After 30 hours of painting, I invited my classmates to ‘deface’ my work with puffy stickers–with no restrictions in place. I painted a realistic scene using acrylic on canvas that could be considered traditional fine art. Preservation and pristineness were priorities for illustration. I decided to flip this idea and allow others to touch and interact with the work. The majority of the reflections from those participating in the sticker placement was that it was challenging to “destroy” a technically good and finished piece. For me at the artist, it was a practice in distancing myself from the perfectionism of traditional fine art. And it would have been incomplete without the interactive element.

Acrylic and Cray-Pas on Cardboard, 3x3’, 2023

An experiment with motion as both my subject and design.

I wanted to make use of the discarded cardboard in my studio. Material exploration reveals so much about medium compatibility. And I realized that not every surface is designed to withstand water. So in this project, I decided to incorporate cray-pas to create deeper colors. The material challenges inspired me to illustrate different viewpoints on each panel of my piece. Ultimately, the exploration of cardboard was a good one because it moved me to imagine the painting as something more sculptural.
